Switzerland : PhD Project:Planetary Ozone Layer of Biotic or Abiotic Origin

The Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) and the Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) of the University of Bern in Switzerland have an open PhD student position for modelling of the ozone layer of exoplanets, Venus, and Mars. Ozone is regarded as a biomarker of habitable planets. Biotic processes on the Earth produce an oxygen-rich atmosphere with an ozone layer (still vulnerable to catalytic ozone depletion). On the other hand, a high probability exist for earth-like planets with oxygen-rich atmospheres as abiotic leftovers of dense H2O-rich protoatmospheres. You investigate questions like:

·       Which planets can have an ozone layer?
·       Spectral signatures of planets with ozone layer?
·       Can we distinguish between biotic and abiotic origin of an ozone layer?

The PhD thesis starts with modelling of ozone of the Martian atmosphere. Photochemistry and radiative transfer are studied with models of various complexity. The results for the ozone distribution of Mars are compared to observations. Then you generalize your findings for modelling of ozone layers of exoplanets. The IAP has an excellent reputation in atmospheric remote sensing and long-term monitoring of ozone and water vapour in the lower and middle atmosphere. We utilize chemistry-climate and weather models for study of stratospheric ozone variations. The PhD thesis is carried out at IAP (University of Bern) and is supervised by Klemens Hocke, Niklaus Kämpfer, Peter Wurz (University of Bern), and Helmut Lammer (Space Research Institute, Graz). The interdisciplinary tasks of the project require a PhD student with experience and passion for:

·      Modelling, Programming, Atmospheric Chemistry,  Radiative Transfer
·       Planets and Exoplanets
·       Understanding of Atmospheric Processes
Further you have a Master or Diploma degree in physics, atmospheric sciences or a related field. You like international co-operations and team work. If you are interested please send an application by email containing your Curriculum Vitae, statement of interest (1 page), 2-3 references or names of referees (with address), copies of your thesis and certificates.  Applications are considered until position is filled.

CALL FOR GRANTS TO STUDY ON A UNIVERSITY MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME AT THE ROVIRA I VIRGILI UNIVERSITY STUDY GRANTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ACADEMIC YEAR 2011-2012
Postgraduate and Doctoral Committee of 28 February 2011

1.  Conditions of the call

The Rovira i Virgili University is announcing a competitive call for grants to study on a university master’s degree programme during the academic year 2011–2012. These grants are aimed at new international students.

1.1 Aim

The present call aims to facilitate and increase the participation of new
international students who fulfil the entry requirements of the URV university master’s degrees.

In the present call 2011-2012, all the university master’s degrees will have at least one student awarded with a grant. Those interuniversity master’s degrees whose registration procedure is not organized by the URV are expressly excluded.

The number of grants awarded can be increased by means of any extra resources proposed by the organs responsible for organizing the master’s degree, as long as they use the specific application form.

1.2. Characteristics of the grant
The grants consist of the whole amount of the registration of the first academic year (60 ECTS credits, including registered and recognized, fees and insurance) and a study bursary of 4.000€.

In the case of on-line masters degrees, the grant only will consist of the whole amount of the registration fees of the first academic year.

In the case of masters’ degrees of 120 ECTS credits, if 60 ECTS credits of the first year are recognized due to previous formation, the grant will involve the whole amount of the second year registration (60 ECTS credits). The student should pay the fees of recognition of the first year.

The Postgraduate and Doctoral School will be responsible for transferring the study bursary to the beneficiary student, by means of the Economic Resources Service. In addition, it will be responsible for paying the registration and tuition fees to the Academic Management Service, and for paying the insurance premium to the insurance company.

The students will receive the amount of 4.000€ in three payments:

First payment: As soon as the students will enrol the university, they will be paid an advance sum of 600€ so that they can cover the first expenses they may have. To receive this advance sum, however, they must have completed the registration procedure.

Second payment: During the two following months after registration to the master, the sum of 2.000€ will be transferred directly into the current accounts of the beneficiaries.

Third payment: During the last week of February 2012, the beneficiaries will be paid the outstanding sum of 1.400€.

Under no circumstances will the registration or tuition fees be transferred to the students. The Postgraduate and Doctoral School will transfer this amount directly to the Academic Management Service.

Likewise, the Postgraduate and Doctoral School will also pay the insurance premium for these students, which will cover the costs of health care, accidents and repatriation during the period they are beneficiaries of the grant.

1.3. Requirements

a) General

1. Students must not be the beneficiaries of other incompatible grants or bursaries (see section 1.9 of the present call). Should they be awarded another grant or bursary of the same characteristics, they will have to explicitly renounce one of them and return the amount they have already received.

The Institute helps build multidisciplinary teams and supports academics in applying their skills to the energy problem. For more information about our research and our people see our website http://www.ucl. ac.uk/energy/ .

The UCL Energy Institute Doctoral Training Programme includes the London - Loughborough Centre for Doctoral Research in Energy Demand which is the premier centre for energy demand research in the built environment in the UK. The Centre offers fully funded four year PhD studentships to eligible applicants.

The Centre brings together two leading energy research universities, UCLwho together have the expertise to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to take on senior roles in academia, industry, commerce and policy formulation. It also links two regions with vibrant and expanding activity in the energy and built environment arena.

The Centre offers a four year programme which combines a one year Master of Research (MRes) followed by a three year doctorate (PhD).
Why apply?

* As one of our students you will join a vibrant and diverse community of academics and graduate students.
* We aim to deliver a broadly based, multi-disciplinary and demanding PhD training programme which will prepare you for your future career.
* On completion of the programme you will have expert knowledge in the area of energy research relevant to your research project; project and programme management skills; teamwork, communication and leadership skills and the ability to seek optimal solutions to complex or multifaceted problems.
* You will receive an enhanced stipend of £17,090 per annum tax-free plus UK/EU fees for four years (conditions apply).

Who we are looking for
Applications are invited from UK graduates with a good first degree (1st or 2:1) in one of the following areas - physics, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, natural sciences, materials science or a related physical science. Eligible EU and overseas students with these or equivalent qualifications may also apply.

Studentship Details
The CDT is dedicated to addressing the challenge of climate change and this should be reflected in the project undertaken by the successful student. Projects on offer this year include:

* Heat pumps and smart energy - a dynamic problem
This engineering/ physics project will investigate the detailed interplay between heat delivery via heat pumps, thermal mass of living spaces, other thermal storage options and the need to minimise demands on the grid.
* Multifunctional insulation materials
The majority of available insulation materials are selected only for their thermal performance. However, considerable cost reductions, energy savings and ease of operations may be achieved by the development of multifunctional insulation materials, selected for properties such as low toxicity, structural performance, ease of cutting to size, robustness for maintenance etc, in addition to thermal properties. This project will investigate the science and cost-effectiveness of multifunctional insulation materials.
* What does all this data mean?
Suited to a student with strong mathematical background, this project will employ probabilistic techniques to investigate the evidence for trends in energy consumption, and relation to physical effects.
* Development of practical tests for estimating heat losses from heat distribution systems in buildings in the field
Changes in building regulations over the last decade have meant that the annual demand for space heating is now less than that for water heating in typical new dwellings. This means that a significant proportion of heat losses associated with provision of hot water can no longer be assumed to be useful and may contribute to overheating of living spaces in Summer. In the same way that the co-heating test has been developed to enable the quanitification of fabric heat loss, there is a need for a series of tests to characterise heat losses from heat distribution and storage systems in buildings. The aim of this project is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate such tests for a variety of building types.

The above projects may evolve over the course of the MRes year, in the light of new developments. We will also consider student proposals.

Studentship Details: 1 full EPSRC funded studentship for eligible applicants
Stipend: Enhanced stipend of £17,090 per annum tax-free plus UK/EU fees
Duration: Four years (conditional upon completion of the MRes + MPhil to PhD upgrade)
