Finland : Postdoctoral Researcher-Department of Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages conducts research on languages spoken in Europe and elsewhere in the world and studies literature written in these languages. The Department also contributes to the development of the general theory of linguistics, translation studies, language technology and literary research. The Department educates experts in these areas of language and culture for the various needs of society and functions as a prominent opinion leader in these disciplines within Finnish society.
The Department of Modern Languages, the largest department in the Faculty of Arts, has a total annual budget of EUR 10 million. It accommodates 14 disciplines with 2,400 first- and second-cycle students and 170 staff members. Each year, an average of 170 Master’s degrees and 10–12 doctoral degrees are completed.
The Department of Modern Languages, Faculty of Arts, invites applications for the position of
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
for a fixed term from 1 June 2012 to 30 May 2013 to participate in the EU project MOLTO supervised by Professor Lauri Carlson.
MOLTO commenced in 2010 and concludes in May 2013.
MOLTO (http://molto-project.eu) is a multinational project that is developing tools for high quality translation of constrained language texts into multiple languages in real time. Prototypes covering a majority of the EU’s 23 official languages have been built. MOLTO is also looking at combining constrained language translation with statistical MT.
The University of Helsinki five-member team is contributing to ontology-based multilingual term management and the combination of MOLTO tools with traditional CAT tools.
Our main role in the last 12 months of the project will be to manage the integration and evaluation of MOLTO solutions and results. We are looking for a person with a background in language technology and/or translation who is interested in assuming a responsible role in coordinating and evaluating a multinational, multilingual translation project and is capable of doing so.
An appointee to the position of post-doctoral researcher shall hold an applicable doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, post-doctoral researchers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.
The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. There will be a four-month trial period for the position.
