Switzerland : PhD position Biochar and soil greenhouse gas emissions

Biochar is a pyrolysis product made of plant biomass that is increasingly used as a soil con-ditioner and considered a mitigation option for reducing agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In a three-years study funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation you will study the effects of biochar amendment on soil borne GHG emissions both in lysimeter and field experiments.
You will work in the Air Pollution / Climate Group at Agroscope, the Swiss Federal Research Institute for Agriculture in Zurich (www.agroscope.ch). The project is carried out in collaboration with Dr. Franz Conen from the University of Basel. Your background is in Biogeosciences, Environmental or Soil Science with a master level university degree with excellent grades. Experience in measurements of GHG’s and application of stable isotopes will be appreciated. The project is scheduled to start in summer 2012.
Please submit a letter of application, statement of research interests, list of publications (or summary of master thesis), curriculum vitae, copy of your university degrees, and addresses of two referees in one single pdf document as early as possible but not later than 18 May 2012 to human_resources(at)art.admin.ch; subject ‘SNF biochar’.
For questions on the project please contact PD Dr. Jens Leifeld, Tel. +41 44 3777 510; jens.leifeld(at)art.admin.ch
Application Deadline : 18 May 2012
