Candidates for PhD positions must hold an MsC degree or equivalent. Students will pursue doctoral studies in one of the research areas of the department which include Cognition and Computation, Artificial Intelligence and Theoretical Computer Science, Natural Language Processing, Ubiquitous Computing, Information Retrieval and Data Mining, Cognitive Multimedia Technologies, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Sound and Music Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Educational Technologies, Technologies and Protocols for Wireless Networks, Wireless Communications, Fixed Networks, Computational Neuroscience, Instrumentation and Biomedical Signals, Computational Imaging and Computational Physiology, and Analysis of Biomedical Data. A more detailed description of the Research areas of the department can be found here.
The PhD Program offers up to 20 fellowships.
Application Period
There are three application periods for 2012-2013:
First application period: January 17th, 2012 to March 15th, 2012

If the applicant's background in the selected research line is not strong enough, he/she should concurrently apply to one of the Master programs offered by the Department (Masters of the DTIC). In addition, the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department or the Ph.D. supervisor may request that a student enrolls in specific Master courses.
The Ph.D. program includes attendance to a research seminar series with weekly talks featuring invited speakers and dealing with topics of interest to the aforementioned research lines.
REQUIRED COURSES
All first-year Ph.D. students must enroll and pass these two mandatory courses:
  1. Research seminars. Year-long series of weekly technical talks.
  2. Presentation of the Ph.D. Thesis Proposal. It consists of a public examination where the student presents his/her thesis proposal to a committee of faculty from the department. While not strictly a course, the student is expected to work on the proposal for the entire year. The examination takes place at the end of the 3rd trimester.
Once these courses have been passed, the student is expected to work full-time on his/her thesis.

TIME LIMITATIONS
Once the thesis proposal has been approved, full-time Ph.D. students have three years to finish their thesis. Part-time students have 5 years to present their thesis, but they are not eligible for most scholarships.
