Sweden : PhD Student Position in Molecular Biology in the topic of ‘Protein Folding Activity of the Ribosome and Prion Diseases

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology comprises several research programs with about 150 researchers. Within the Molecular Biology program there are currently 3 different research groups with a total of about 25 researchers and students.

Qualification: Applicants should have passed Master degree or Civil Engineering exam in Molecular Biology, Applied Biotechnology, Molecular Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or other equivalent subjects. Candidates who have completed or are on the way to complete their degree project, but didn’t get the degree yet can also apply. The final decision will be taken after successful completion of the research studies.

Requirement
: The applicant should have a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry. Experience in doing project-work with ribosome or RNA is an advantage. Merits will be given for technical skills in RNA related work.Similarly, experience in protein folding projects and prion research will be a plus. For this project, the ability to work within a multinational group is important. The candidate must be able to communicate orally and in writing in English. The ability to teach in English and/or Swedish is important. The project will involve mainly biochemical analysis of the protein folding activity of the ribosome (PFAR). The focus of the study will be on the mechanistic aspects of the process to explain how PFAR is linked to the prion diseases. The role of certain antiprion drugs blocking PFAR will be studied in protein folding assay using sample proteins. There is no health hazard associate din this project. The main supervisor is Assoc. Prof. Suparna Sanyal.

Responsibility: The holder of the position will devote most time to research. The position will involve that the candidate performs other duties at the department, including teaching and administrative duties as required, up to a maximum of 20% of the position.
